This has taken a long time to complete, even now I am finishing the last pages of the fourth quartet, Little Gidding. May 2009 I started, and as I chanted through the text there was a transformation from the ages of man idea to a preoccupation with evolution. The four 'ages', give way at the end of 'The Dry Salvages', replaced by fossils, apes and other symbols.
