Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials - Harpies

Looking now it seems funny that the harpies would spend so much time on their hair! At the time I'd been watching a ballet of Romeo and Juliet, the ballerinas playing the temptresses of Verona had these tight curls and braids that would look great for the harpies.
